"THE DASH"
Our life's the dash -
In cold marble set
Between our date
Of birth and death.
U.T. Spurrell
It is with great sadness that the family of the late Uriah Thomas Spurrell (Tom) announce his sudden passing on June 13, 2023 in Labrador City, NL at the age of 80. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories are his devoted wife Bonnie of 57 years and his children Elaine (David) and Daphne along with his three grandchildren: Alysha, Amanda and Travis; Brothers: Herb (Ada), David and Jimmy; Sisters: Pat (Ed), Levine (Geoff), Juanita, Diane (Jim), Linda (Garry), and Joan (Terry); As well as a small circle of close friends and other relatives. Predeceased by his parents: Samuel and Greta and sister Judy.
Tom was born and raised in St. John's, NL but he often said he "grew up" on Fogo Island, NL. He lived in Labrador City for 58 years and worked at IOC for 34 years as an electrician.
Tom would be best described as a profound and prolific poet. He observed the smallest details of the world around him and composed his poetry after much contemplation. Tom could write a poem about every subject matter under the sun and over the years compiled hundreds of poems to be treasured forever. His daily posts on Facebook will be dearly missed.
Tom was passionate about photography. The beauty he conveyed in his pictures was admired by all those who loved him. We will miss all the beautiful bird, butterfly, sunset, winter scenes, and photos of Fogo Island. We will cherish every moment Tom captured through the eye of his lens over the past 60 years. Another passion Tom enjoyed over his life time was fly fishing. He spent countless hours tying flies and going in over the hills on Fogo Island and trouting at Steady waters.
Tom spend many years studying and mastering the game of chess and backgammon. His opponents would often jump for joy if they were actually able to beat him at a game!
Tom lived life to the fullest. May you eternally walk the shore of Sandy Cove Beach.
Special thanks to the paramedics and the hospital staff at the Labrador West Health Centre.
Cremation has already taken place. As per Tom's wishes, there will be no funeral service. A celebration of life will take place on Fogo Island, NL at a later date.
"TIME"
The time will come when winter will be over, the frost, the snow, the wind will all expire; green grass will spread in splender with the clover and birds returning sing upon the wire.
Time will bear us onward with the river flowing gently through the forest green and walking 'long its mossy banks we're casting a feathered fly upon that sliver stream.
Time gives us such a little while of love and laughter, to show a smile; see stars glitter in the streams, or wonder what it is we're really after being here trying to catch dreams.
