Obituary of Edith Emma Freake
It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that the family of the late Edith Freake of Wabush announce her passing on February 26, 2024, at the Labrador West Health Centre. Left to mourn with fond and loving memories are her husband of 55 years, Ray; and her three children: Craig, Dion (Katie), and Angela (Chris). She was the treasured Nan of four precious grandchildren: Joel, Evan, Avery, and Evelyn; and a loved sister of: Netta, Lewis (Olga), Daisy (Roger). She is survived by her sister-in-law Marilyn (Calvin), and her brothers-in-law: Ron (Donna), Wayne (Linda), Greg (Pauline), Lloyd (Trudy), Howard (Sylvia), and Tom (Glenda). She will be dearly remembered by her large circle of nieces and nephews, other relatives, and her many friends. Edith was predeceased by her parents, Dorothy, and John Kinden, as well as her brothers-in-law: Howard and Ross, and sister-in-law Gertie (Harold). Edith was born and grew up in the small outport community of Stag Harbour, on Fogo Island. She often spoke fondly of her childhood and the people there. She completed Teacher’s College in 1966 in St. John’s, and then taught in Beaumont and Fogo. She went to Labrador West in 1969 to be with Ray, got married, started her family, and stayed there ever since.
Edith will be forever remembered as a sweet, kind-hearted, caring, and gentle soul who loved her family and friends. She looked forward to going out every Friday with her very special friend Margie; and of course, going to celebrate special birthdays with her many other friends. She loved to laugh and tell jokes, listen to music, and she was an expert in crossword puzzles! She adored anything to do with the Royals, whether it was on tv or in a book. She was a very involved member of the United Church Women’s group for many years and always enjoyed her special times with her church family. She loved going back to Fogo Island in the summers and spending her time in Stag Harbour in their summer home. Most of all, her family meant the world to her. Edith will be severely missed by all who knew her.
Family and friends may visit from 4:00-7:00 pm on Sunday March 3, 2024 at Temple's Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held at 2:00pm on Monday March 4 2024, at the Carol United Church, with interment to follow at the Wabush Cemetery. The funeral service will live streamed from Temple's Funeral Home Facebook page.
The Royal Canadian Legion - Branch 47 will be hosting a celebration of life for the family and friends of Edith from 4:00-7:00pm on Saturday March 2 2024, all are welcomed.
As expression of sympathy donations can be made to the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation or Carol United Church.
